 All applications should be mailed to the MRPA Awards Committee, PO Box 16451, Hattiesburg, MS 39404-6451 by September 5, 2008, or hand-delivered to the committee at the Vicksburg conference no later than Monday, September 11, 2008.

Student Scholarship Award

Purpose: The purpose of the MRPA Student Scholarship Award is to recognize outstanding examples of leadership among Mississippi college students and to provide financial assistance to Mississippi residents seeking degrees and careers in the parks, recreation, and leisure services industry.

Amount: $250.00 (Minimum)

Eligibility:
1. A resident of Mississippi currently registered as a full-time student at a Mississippi college or university.
2. Major in Parks & Recreation and/or Leisure Services professional preparation program.
3. Junior or Senior status as defined by the college of choice.
4. A minimum of 2.75 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 grade system) on all undergraduate coursework at time of application.
5. A current, official copy of the student's transcript, indicating most recent term and overall GPA.
6. An undergraduate student working on a bachelor's degree.
7. Member, Mississippi Recreation and Park Association.
8. Preference given to students who have demonstrated financial need.

1. Students may be either nominated or may personally apply.
2. Nomination/Application forms are available from the MRPA Executive Office, P.O. Box 16451, Hattiesburg, MS 39404-6451; (601) 582-3361.

Deadline: Postmarked no later than September 08, 2008 or hand delivered by 9/15/08 in Vicksburg.


Procedure:
1. Submit a transcript of all undergraduate work.
2. Submit three letters of recommendation: one from a park, recreation, or leisure services professional; and two from faculty.
3. Submit a completed application form.

Exemplary Leadership Activities:

Applicants will be evaluated and selected on demonstrated leadership activities. Particular leadership activities of interest include, but may not be limited to the following:
* leadership and/or participation in local, state, regional or national recreation or leisure professional organizations or associations.
* leadership and/or participation in scholastic activities and organizations.
* leadership and/or participation in community service clubs and organizations.
* leadership and/or participation in religious, cultural, and/or social organizations.
* paid and volunteer work experience.

Convention Scholarship

Purpose: The MRPA Convention Scholarship is designed to provide convention registration to a Mississippi student in exchange for his/her work at the annual convention.


Amount: Current full package student registration fees.


Eligibility:
1. Currently enrolled as a full-time student at a Mississippi college or university.
2. Major in parks, recreation, or leisure services program.
3. Attendance during entire convention schedule, as required by MRPA Executive Office. (October 22-25, 200)
4. Overall G.P.A. of 2.75 (on 4.0 scale) on all undergraduate coursework at the time of application.
5. Membership in the Mississippi Recreation and Park Association.

Convention Scholarship Application

 

Howard Sommer / C. W. Kirkland
Professional Development Award

Purpose: The purpose of the MRPA Howard Sommer/C. W. Kirkland Professional Development Award is to provide students in their junior year the opportunity to further their professional development by providing financial assistance to join the National Recreation and Parks Association and the Mississippi Recreation and Parks Association to Mississippi residents seeking degrees and careers in the parks, recreation and leisure services industry.

Amount: MRPA/NRPA Student Membership Dues

Eligibility:
1. A resident of Mississippi currently registered as a full-time student at a Mississippi college or university.
2. Majoring in Parks and Recreation and/or Leisure Services professional preparation program.
3. A junior student status as defined by the college of choice.
4. A minimum of 2.75 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 system) on all course work at the time of application.
5. A current copy of the student’s transcript, indicating the most recent term and overall GPA.
